Title: Smart Neurorehabilitation Through Virtual Reality

Presenter: Lauren Sheehan, OTD, OTR/L

Course Description: Upper extremity function is one of the most commonly experienced activity limitations of patients post-stroke, brain injury and other neurologic disorders.  Interventions incorporating virtual reality may serve as a method for motivating and engaging patients as well as driving the intensity of repetitions needed for motor relearning. This webinar explores some available virtual reality technology and provides resources for other products on the market to be used clinically and at home use as tools for upper extremity rehabilitation.

Course Objectives:

1.Understand the benefits of virtual reality interventions for neuro-rehabilitation compared to “traditional” methods
2.Explore current products on the market for use in the clinic and home to increase repetitions, engagement and function
3.Respond to case situation questions related to how the Rapael Smart Glove fit within a patient’s OT home program after stroke or brain injury

Presenter Bio:

Lauren is celebrating her 10th year as an occupational therapist in 2017.  Her dream to join a technology company was realized when dreaming about the possibility of doing something “outside the box” after spending the last decade in outpatient neuro clinical practice and most recently in administration and management roles.  Lauren has served in various roles on her state occupational therapy associations and is a proponent of being an active member, particularly in advocating for occupational therapy through legislation and contact with elected officials.  She previously served in AOTA's Representative Assembly as a representative of Washington state.  Lauren is excited to share her passion about the interection of rehab and technology.  Lauren believes that OT professionals are poised to be product designers, user experience experts and consultants as it relates to technology solutions that meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.
